Hey! I'm Mikaela, a freelance editior, blogger and full-time Gryffindor.
I distinctly remember the day I finished writing my very first manuscript.
It was something I’d dreamed of doing my whole life, and as I sat there staring at it with that incredible sense of pride rising in my chest, I wasn’t quite sure what to do next. All I knew was that I didn’t want my first book to be my last.
So, I kept writing.
Ten manuscripts and eleven years later, I haven’t slowed down.
I had no idea what journey I’d begun on all those years ago. No idea that it would introduce me to a community of authors who shared my passion, and even wanted me to help them make their stories the best they could be.
Writing is a solitary profession. It can be lonely, isolating, and down-right draining. When there's no one to turn to for help, advice, or insight, it's easy to just quit.
That's where I come in.
It's my mission to help you write the very best novel you possibly can, and help you create your dream career as a writer.
"Mikaela is great editor I’ve had the privilege of working with over multiple projects from short stories to novels. She is fantastic at highlighting areas for improvement, giving critical but encouraging advice on plot and character development and copy editing. She is a pleasure to work with and I highly recommend her services to any writer looking to improve their work creatively or structurally. She is someone to have on your team in the journey to take your book to your readers." - Catherine Gunther
Six years ago, I edited my first manuscript. The feeling was almost exhilarating. Seeing the author go through a process I was so familiar with (and addicted to) brought me an indescribable sense of joy, and immutable fulfilment.
I knew I had to keep going.
For years I edited fiction and non-fiction in my spare time, never once considering that this passion project could be my purpose. When I graduated University with a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, editing fiction was further down on my list of careers than being a full-time medical test subject.
And yet, here we are.
I believe the mere act of wanting something should be ample motivation to get it.
I created Riverside Editing and The Riverside Library to share everything I've learned about writing and editing over the years.
