I have well and truly slipped out of my writing routine. When life gets busy and you have so much to do but so little time to do it, I find that hobbies, or passions, or anything of the like get pushed on the backburner in a heartbreakingly spectacular fashion.
Writing now permanently lives on the backburner for me. And I am not okay with that.
I have decided to do something about it.
If I’m going to be honest, I have decided to do something about it multiple times and never got around to it, but this time, I’m going to try and hold myself accountable.
How? I’m glad you asked.
It’s my absolute pleasure to welcome you to the newest segment on my blog – Friday Night, Write. In which, together, we write.
How it Works
I shall post a writing prompt on my Twitter/Instagram story on Friday afternoon, and shall then spend Friday Night writing, and I’d love for you to join. (You don't have to write to the prompt, by the way).
Now, I know that Friday night is probably a really bad time to do it, and you’re all probably busy with things I don’t have, like social lives, but honestly, Friday Night, Write just sounded better than any other day of the week, so I’m going with it. You can write your piece any day of the week. I’ll be writing on Friday.
At the end of my writing session on Friday, I’ll be sharing a blog post with some of or all of what I wrote that night. I may do an explanatory post, and talk about writing and give tips I’ve picked up along the way, or I might post writing with some art I’ve drawn during the week, like a mini portfolio, or I may simply post writing with absolutely no context whatsoever (which is the most me option of all the above).
I’ll be encouraging you all to do the same, even if it’s just a snippet. You can post it to your blog, like me, or to twitter, or Instagram, or whatever you like. If you want me to see it, paste the link to your blog post in a reply to my initial tweet, and I’ll go check it out and probably re-tweet it. If you don’t have twitter, just paste your link in the comments section of my blog. Conversely, if you don't want to share anything at all, but just want to write while we're all writing, go for it. You do you. I'll never force you to share something if you don't want to.
If you’re joining in, make sure to tag me in any posts to do with our little writing group – instastories, out of context tweets, random photos of the scribble that you call handwriting, which you’ve artistically posted to Instagram (or is that just me?) and I’ll make sure to check them out.
So, what can you write?
You can write anything. Are you writing a novel? Write it! Share quotes, or scenes, or epic dialogue that none of us can actually fully appreciate because we have no idea what’s going on. You can write poetry! Short pieces of random prose! You can write essays! Blog posts! Letters to your childhood self, telling them that all your dreams will turn to dust just like the end of Infinity War. Or not. Your call.
The point is to write. Just write.
Tomorrow I’ll be tweeting our first prompt on my Twitter account & instagram story at 12pm AEST. That gives my future friends time to write before Friday night is over, and my friends stuck in the past time to see the tweet/story and take note of it so you can write on your Friday night. Now, don’t fret, if you can’t write on Friday but still want to join in, I’ll be reading and sharing all throughout the week, so will everyone else!
Feel free to find a Friday Night, Write squad in the same time zone so you can egg each other on!encourage one another!
So, who is excited? Will you be joining me while I write tomorrow? Let me know in the comments!
